This is a 4-year project funded by the NWO Open Competition M. We started the project in early 2026 together with Wen-Wei Lin. We will use a combination of behavioral methods (online and lab-based studies) electrophysiology (EEG), and computational modeling (POMDP, reinforcement learning, normative modeling) to infer individual strategies that people adopt in prediction-based tasks and tp quantify differences between individuals.
Abstract:
Predictive processing is thought to be a key brain function, but studies show it works differently in various situations. People also use unique strategies for learning, which are linked to different brain activity patterns. We will collect data on how people predict to see if these differences can be explained by one model or if each person needs a different model. This research aims to understand whether everyone's brain works the same way when predicting and learning or if each person has a unique pattern.
